How do you get rid of gurgling and smells rising from the pipes?

Choosing a drainage system

Basic questions when choosing a drainage system :

When choosing a trap : What type of appliance is it to be fitted on to? How much space is available for the appliance?

Choosing a shower waste: What is the diameter of the shower tray hole: 50, 60 or 90 mm?

Choosing a sink waste or sink set: What material is the sink made of? What is the diameter of the sink hole: 50, 60 or 90 mm?

Choosing an overflow: Is the overflow hole round or rectangular?

Choosing a bath waste: What is the distance between the overflow and the waste?

Choosing an overflow spacer: What material is the basin made of? What is the diameter of the overflow hole: 25 or 30 mm?

Choosing a connector

The advantages of flexible drainage systems

Either when renovating or in new buildings, this enables to get round connection problems between the trap and the drainage system. The connections are made without having to modify anything. Wirquin’s MAGICFLEX drainage connector is a good example: its flexible, accordion-type structure enables it to compensate for alignment faults between the two tubes. It can also be compressed (ideal when renovating). No more calculating angles: MAGICFLEX can be adjusted from 0 to 120°, in all directions. MAGICFLEX resists all usual detergent agents on the market, and can replace all elbows and rigid sleeves, for new constructions or renovation: you just have one reference to think about per diameter! MAGICFLEX: one connector, a hundred-and-one solutions!

Choosing a WC pipe
There are several types of rigid pipes. Wirquin offers long and short elbowed pipes, straight sleeves, and also 45° or 67.5° elbowed sleeves.
However, the new Wirquin flexible pipes can save you a lot of manipulation and other hazardous groping around!
Wirquin flexible structure pipes can be fitted in hard to reach places, save you combining WC connectors and elbows to obtain the desired direction, and are easy to adapt to all pipes already installed! Finally, no need to remove the pan to replace the pipe! Easy and quick to fit, they will save you time and space.

Unblocking a wash basin

Hair, waste, jewellery… these can all obstruct the trap in your wash basin. It is easy to unblock: depending on the suze of the plug, you may not even have to dismantle the trap plunger begin by using the rubber !

1. Obstruct the overflow with a damp cloth or piece of sticky tape.
2. Half fill the wash-hand basin and install the plunger, tilting it so it will fill up.
3. Apply the plunger to the waste. Pump it up and down several times, then pull it away sharply!
4. Collect the waste before it goes back down the trap, and that’s it!
5. Warning ! If you use the plunger after having used a chemical de-blocker, you must imperatively protect yourself from any eventual projections or splash (notably via the overflow) with gloves, and eventually airtight protective glasses.

6. You can also use a chemical de-blocker. The liquid ones are preferable, as they won’t obstruct the rap. These product should be handled with care.
7. Pour the product carefully into the half-filled wash basin, then remove the waste. Leave the product to react for a few minutes: the blockage will disappear.
8. Rinse thoroughly with hot water: your wash basin is unblocked!
9. Warning ! Do not use if connected to a septic tank.

10. If these operations have no effect, it may be necessary to dismantle.

11. Place a bucket or appropriate-sized basin under the trap.
12. The tool to be used will depend on the type of trap: a spanner for 6-sided nuts, combination pliers for crenellated plugs, your hand for plastic plugs. For castiron trap and steel, use a ? so as not to damage the surface.
13. Dismantle the trap, making sure you don’t turn the whole system round.
14. Allow the water and impurities to run into the bucket.
15. Clean out the inside of the trap with a bottle brush.
16. Cupped trap are much easier to remove and retain impurities easily. To protect them during dismantling, surround them with sticky tape.
17. In models with no inspection pad, both nuts should be unscrewed and the swan-neck should be removed. Empty it and clean with a flexible bottle brush. Rinse the plug and re-assemble.
18. For models with plugs, unscrew the cup and wash it out. Replace the washer carefully inside the cup or on the flared nipple before re-tightening the trap.
19. Warning ! If you dismantle the trap after having used a chemical de-blocker, you must imperatively protect yourself from projections and splashes by wearing gloves, and eventually airtight protective glasses. If you are not careful, you may seriously burn your eyes, hands, etc.

20. To make your job easier and save time, Wirquin has developed a revolutionary trap: the COMPACT trap. It is made of flexible material which, if obstructed, can be de-blocked by simply squeezing the pipe to unblock the matter and wash it away. No more plungers, chemicals or dismantling: the operation is clean, easy and quick! If the plug is farther along the drainage system, unblock using a plumber’s snake.

How do you get rid of gurgling and nasty smells that come up the pipes ?

“Gurgles” and smells have the same origin: a suction phenomenon inside the drainage pipes. When you pull the chain or empty the bathtub, the shifting of the water sucks the water into the evacuation pipes.
This empties the water in the trap’s seal in the wash basin or other sanitary appliances in the same vicinity (the aim of which is to get rid of smells!), so the smells come back up!
The solution: WIRQUIN’s range of ventapipes !

The principle is simple: each time water moves in the pipes, the ventapipe lets in a tiny amount of air, which is mixed with the water and stops the suction effect and its disadvantages (gurglings, smells, etc.). So, when you install or renovate your appliances, don’t forget the tiny detail that makes all the difference: the ventapipe!
